Tough guy shows tender side at Nuneaton school

Martial artist and actor Alex Reid ditched his hard-man image during a recent visit to a school to address the issue of bullying, admitting that he was a victim of it during his younger days.

Reid, 38, called in at Nuneaton school Camp Hill Primary to speak to youngsters about the problem, noting that bullying is often the result of perpetrators struggling for confidence, and that children having targets and self-identity is at the root of combating victimisation.

The former husband of model Katie Price said:

“First of all, there’s nothing cool about being bullied and, secondly, we have to realise that bullies are insecure people.

“The main message that I want to put over to the kids is that they should strive to have self-esteem, to be confident in themselves and to have a goal – a vision – of what they would like to achieve.”

Reid went on to say that the bullying he endured at school was not helped by his own reluctance in speaking up about it, and that communication is key to calling a halt to bullying before it gathers momentum.

It was the second time the cage fighter had made an appearance at the school, having also taken part in a 2011 campaign about the importance of eating a healthy breakfast. These types of awareness programmes in schools are often supported by printed materials circulated among children and parents in the area, with poster and flyer printing companies in Coventry and Nuneaton likely to lend a hand.
