Coventrys Priory Centre reopens

The Priory visitor centre within Coventry has recently opened its doors again.

Around £1m was invested in the Priory Centre as part of Coventry’s Millennium spending. However, resources became limited and the building closed down during February last year. A social enterprise has stepped in and reopened the centre. Booklet printers in Coventry might be used to showcase what the place has to offer.

Carole Donnelly, a social entrepreneur, stated:

“It's a stunning modern building housing artefacts from the original Coventry Cathedral. We have set it up not only as a visitor centre but also as a sustainable business. The upstairs space is an events and conference facility and we are also seeking sponsorship.”

Volunteers are currently staffing the centre. At the moment, public access is restricted to three days each week, but these arrangements could be subject to change in the future.

The Time Team show of Channel 4 was involved in a local excavation at the end of the 1990s. This work discovered fragments of a tiled floor, which had been laid down in the Middle Ages. All the important remains are now on display once more.

George Demidowicz, a former conservation head at the council, was partly responsible for the creation of the Priory Centre during 2001. He has expressed his approval for the reopening of the site.
