The bridge in question connects a listed building with a civic centre. Clad in green copper, the structure is perceived as ugly by some people. As a result, councillors have voted in favour of its removal.
Coventry University is playing a leading role in the regeneration strategy going forward. The idea is that the University will take control of four civic centres. These are likely to be destroyed. The university intends to replace the buildings with a headquarters, a research facility, a hub for international students, and an incubation unit for businesses.
David Soutter, the deputy vice-chancellor for Coventry University, explained the vision to the Coventry Telegraph:
“We view this as a great opportunity to improve and add to facilities at the university but also create something worthy of what is a key site for the city.”
The transformation of the area will not impact on the adjacent crown courts, nor will the nearby Coventry Magistrates’ Court (CMC) be affected by the proposals.
The precise timetable for the demolition of the bridge has yet to be released. However, assurances about the future aesthetics of the area have been made by those in charge of design issues.
