30 million in funding for technology in Coventry

George Osbourne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has said that money to the tune of £30 million is going to be spent on developing 3D printing and aerospace in Coventry.

The money is going to help create a hub in the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Ansty Business Park for 3D Printing. There are already Print shops in Coventry offering various services, but 3D printing is a specialist area and is different from the production of Posters, Business Cards, and Banners.

The industry already has funding, and the latest investment will boost it to a total of around $60 million.

Some of the money is going to be used for approximately 1,000 engineering apprenticeships.

The Chancellor said that this funding was just one part of the £2 billion aerospace strategy by the Government. He went on to say:

"Coventry is at the centre of the British manufacturing industry and I want to make sure it is at the centre of British technology.

"This investment will mean some of the world's most advanced manufacturing is happening right here."

A new aerospace technology centre at the MTC is going to use around £15 million of taxpayers’ money, while £15.3 million of it is going to be used on the 3D printing facility.

Clive Hickman, who is the centre’s chief executive, has said that:

"[…] it's been bubbling for the last five or so years. Now it's become important for the industry and for the future.”
