What's Happening in London - Clapham, England…

School near Clapham to undergo huge refurbishment

A school in a part of South London, near Clapham, is set to be knocked down and completely rebuilt, with the aim of providing better facilities for its pupils.

The Francis Barber Pupil Referral Unit is situated in Tooting, and is designed for children who are unable to fit into the mainstream education system. It is, however, very small, and is severely lacking in modern facilities.

Now, the Department for Education plans to take a drastic approach to tackling that problem.

It is intending to demolish the entirety of the existing school, with the exception of the sports hall. Then it will construct an entirely new teaching block that has three storeys, and a two-storey administration one.

Stationery printers in Clapham can be useful in supplying essential forms and other organisational materials to local schools, to help ensure smooth management.

There is clearly an urgent need for this school to have more space. Currently, the same room is being used for both dining and for teaching food preparation lessons.

A planning committee for Wandsworth Council gave the nod to the plans last month. Rex Osborn from the council said that the current facilities were blocking attempts to make the building energy efficient, as well as undermining the chances of pupils.

Work is due to begin soon, with an expected start date yet to be announced.
