Redevelopment plans for Clapham station could move forward

Plans to redevelop the railway station at Clapham Junction could take a step forward later this year, as Network Rail will submit its strategic outline business case.

The intention is for the company to submit this before the close of 2019, which means that the project could get underway by next year. The railway station at Clapham Junction is the UK interchange station that deals with the highest number of people. The redevelopment plans could see tunnels built below the station, an increase in the platform capacity, the rail tracks realigned and adjustments to the platforms to bring them and the trains closer together.

The proposed redevelopment of the station was first revealed at the beginning of 2017, with the station having grown at a rapid pace throughout the last 10 years. Back in 2009, Clapham Junction station was used by 17 million passengers each year, but that number had risen to 32.3 million by 2016.

Companies with transport responsibilities sometimes use local print shops for timetables, schedules and other materials. According to New Civil Engineer, Stuart Kirkwood, the development director for Network Rail stated at a recent conference that the SOBC would feature the option of total redevelopment or other choices that are less expensive.

Network Rail assumed control of the station during April 2018, ahead of the potential work.
