What's Happening in London - Clapham, England…

Plans announced for revamp of Clapham Omnibus

One of the oldest buildings in Clapham is set to undergo a comprehensive revamp, following a successful campaign to raise the necessary funding.

The Clapham Omnibus was originally built 130 years ago and it was turned into a theatre back in 2013. The hope is that the changes will enable it to support itself financially. The changes will see a number of additions made to the theatre, including a brand new bar and café, as well as improvements to the current office area and the space for rehearsals. The work will cost around £150,000, all of which was raised through the campaign.

Speaking to What’s On Stage, Marie McCarthy, its artistic director, stated that the revamp would make the theatre a better place to be for those who work there as well as those who come to see its shows. Promotional pens and similar items are sometimes sold at theatres, to bring in cash and spread the word.

Fiona Mactaggart, the chair of the theatre, went on to add:

“The new café/bar will create a welcoming local social space and make the building feel closer to people living in Clapham and those who might be nervous about crossing the threshold into a theatre.”

The plan is for the work on renovating and expanding the venue to be finished for the start of its autumn programme.
