New gastropub to open in Clapham

A building in Clapham that used to house a nightclub is to be converted into a combination of flats and a brand-new gastropub, after the plans were green lit by Lambeth Council.

The Artesian Well nightclub closed its doors for the final time seven years ago, along with the restaurant, Lost Society, which stood next door to it. Both of the disused buildings were then acquired by Marston Properties three years later, and the developer is now planning to create a gastropub in the ex-nightclub building, as well as demolishing the former restaurant to build nine new flats.

Housing developers often turn to brochure printing shops based in the same area to supply colourful brochures showcasing their available properties.

The proposals from Marston Properties received the support of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), and Marston has stated that it sees them as part of wider plans for the regeneration of this part of Clapham. It owns other buildings in the same locale.

Residents have also welcomed the idea. According to the Wandsworth Guardian, one of them stated in the application that:

“We believe this to be a very welcome redevelopment of a rundown site which is a current eyesore on our road.”

It is hoped that the conversion and building work needed at the site can start towards the end of the year.
