What's Happening in London - Clapham, England…

Multi-million-pound facelift for station at Clapham Junction

The railway station at Clapham Junction is being given a multi-million-pound facelift that is intended to both increase the space and improve the amenities at one of London’s busiest stations.

This station is one of the most frequently used in the country, handling a total of 8.5 million departures and arrivals each year, as well as close to 7 million interchanges. Despite that though, it is currently a cramped station with little in the way of amenities for those waiting at it, which it is hoped this revamp will fix. The cost is expected to be £35 million.

Among the new facilities that will be installed at the station are a number of cafes and shops, while there are also plans to enlarge the amount of space available to passengers using it. The Brighton Yard entrance will have three further ticket barriers added to it, so that congestion can be eased.

The look of the station will also be improved. The first phase currently underway involves the overbridge being repainted. Busy stations like this often rely on print shops in Clapham to ensure that they don’t run out of tickets or train schedules.

Christian Neill from South Western Railways said that the project would make the station easier for customers to use as well as more attractive and pleasant.

A finish date has not been announced.
