Cambridge organisation seeks to widen bridge
A community group based in Cambridge has announced it is seeking support to widen one of the city’s bridges, for reasons of safety.
Cambridge Carbon Neutral is an organisation that is focused on cutting the city’s carbon emissions, but it has now turned its attention to a local bridge. Burrell’s Walk Bridge acts as a connector between west Cambridge and the centre of town, with the group arguing that it is too narrow right now. It is used by both cyclists and pedestrians, but the group states that the current width puts the latter at risk from the former.
They have been keen to get it widened for some time, but the project was held up because the ownership of the bridge was uncertain. It has now been clarified that Cambridge City Council owns it so the group is trying to get the necessary backing for its campaign.
Flyer printing from shops in Cambridge can be a quick and efficient way to spread the word about campaigns of this sort, as flyers can easily be handed out on the streets.
Cambridge Carbon Neutral want to see the bridge widened from 1.7 metres to around 4 metres. That would allow walkers and cyclists to both use it safely.
It has already secured support from a councillor who will bid for local authority funding.
