Cambridge to get new cycle street

A brand new street for cyclists is set to be created at a location in Cambridge, marking the first facility of that kind in the whole of England.

The purpose behind the creation of this street is to improve road safety for those on bicycles. It will be one part of a larger project called the Comberton Greenway that is being overseen by the Greater Cambridge Partnership. The location within the city that has been chosen for it is Adams Road. When it has been completed, it will be the first cycle street in any English town or city.

Adams Road has not been selected at random – it is among the city’s most widely used cycle routes. During peak travel periods, roughly 3,000 cyclists use it every day. The work to convert it into a cycle street is expected to take 30 weeks to finish.

The cycle street will be part of the greenway network that the Greater Cambridge Partnership is building. It will also tackle the key safety problems on the existing street, including the busy junctions, narrow pavements and crowded carriageway.

When new facilities like this are ready to go, the local council is usually keen to promote them. Poster printing by Cambridge shops is one way of doing that.

Greater Cambridge Partnership chair Brian Milnes said that this scheme would ensure that safety comes first.
