University of Bath named as first Para camp

With under 1,000 days until the start of the 2016 Paralympic Games, Bath has again been named as the first get together camp for the GB team.

The Opening Ceremony of the Rio Games takes place on August 5, with the British Paralympic Association (BPA) hoping to emulate the success in London 2012.

The BPA is hoping its training schedule will help achieve this, with the University of Bath getting its banner printing ready ahead of the team's arrival.

The Bath date, which runs from tomorrow until this Sunday, January 5, is the first in a series of so called 'multi-sport preparation camps'.

The idea behind the initiative is to give all athletes an opportunity to be around professionals from other sports. Athletes and staff often mingle at the Paralympics, but it is not a common experience. Part of the plan is to help with acclimatisation towards this.

In past years, the camps set up and run by the BPA have very much had training as their focus. This is a shift, however, seen ahead of Beijing and London. Instead, the prime focus of the camp will be on education and learning from past experiences and observations.

Talking about the camp, the BPA's director of performance, Penny Briscoe, said:

“The aim of our multi-sport preparation programme is to make the unfamiliar familiar so that when an athlete becomes part of the ParalympicsGB team, they know what to expect and can just focus on delivering their personal best performance.”

Briscoe went on to say that the previous camps, including those run at Bath, have been successful.
