An office block in Bath city centre is set to be converted into a number of new flats, with Bath & North East Somerset Council having given the nod.
Chartist House is a block of open-plan office spaces, having undergone conversion to that end back in the early 1980s. Before this, it was three houses and the building has been a part of the city since 1724. Now, it is going to be transformed back into accommodation, as ORM Developments intends to turn it into 15 luxury flats. The company submitted a change of use application to the council, which has been approved.
The block has a total of five floors and all of them will undergo conversion. The economic development department of the council was not happy at losing office space in the centre of the city, but Chartist House has been vacant since 2024. Despite advertising since then, no local companies have sought to occupy it.
Companies often are keen to rent offices in Bath city centre, because it is home to other useful services. These include Print shops that offer Corporate Gifts for winning over clients.
The new flats at this block will not include any affordable housing, due to a lack of financial viability. However, the council will be taking a surplus profit of just over £150,000 as compensation.
