Midsomer Norton in North East Somerset could soon be subject to a 20mph speed limit in a bid to reduce accidents and to improve road safety. Bath and North East Somerset Council distributed leaflets to local residents recently – as part of a consultation process aiming to give local people their say on the Plans to change the speed limit – using flyer printing. Bath residents and those from the wider Somerset area acknowledge that speed limits are a big concern and a sensitive issue, so this consultation period will have a big influence on whether the proposal goes ahead or not.
Simon Ellis, the Chief Inspector for Avon and Somerset police, spoke about the new Plans, saying:
“Generally we welcome the concept of 20 mph in built up areas. Reducing the speed of motorists in built up areas has to be a good thing and I have no doubts that it will make these areas safer places.
“I am hoping that drivers will take responsibility for the speed of their vehicles and adjust their driving habits accordingly. My officers will work alongside the Council ensuring we raise awareness of the new speed limits and encouraging drivers to embrace and adhere to the new speed limits.”
The council is investing half a million pounds into changing speed limits to improve road safety in the region. Doing this collaboratively with local residents to gauge their feelings on the matter is likely to generate more public buy-in and make the lower speed limit scheme a success.Get a Free Quote for Plans
