New fencing for Baths tree in Abbey Green

An old tree has been protected by Bath and North East Somerset Council.

The large tree has stood for over a century now and there had been concerns that the turf in Abbey Green was suffering from excess footfall. Gravel and fencing have now been employed to defend the soil on which the tree depends. The Plane tree may feature in future Postcards from Bath.

Martin Shields, a director at the local authority who has responsibility for environmental issues, stated:

“The council has been aware that the area under the large tree in Abbey Green is not particularly attractive and we wanted to find a positive solution.”

Shields explained that the fresh surface was a gentle shade of gold. He added that the work was implemented in a manner that respected the tree and its surroundings. The gravel utilised on the job was self-binding in nature. This was a solution that could be described as authentic.

The council engaged in a partnership working to achieve its goals. The Bath Business Improvement District (BID) and Bath Tourism Plus both played an important role in getting things done in a timely way.

The chief executive at Bath’s BID, Louise Prynne, pointed out that her organisation had been happy to contribute towards the sustainability of the area. The removal of the equipment used on the job was planned so it would not clutter up the place for long.
