New centre opens to tackle anxiety disorders

A new centre is opening in the Bath region to help local people to cope with and overcome obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and other anxiety-related conditions.

The University of Bath is joining forces with officials at the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Trust to help fund and run a new centre that will specialise in treating Forms of OCD.

OCD is a condition which affects many people in the Bath and Somerset region and officials hope that the centre will help to treat suffers while educating families and friends on how they can offer support. Many local health authorities and mental health charities use digital printing to produce literature which is designed to educate people on Forms of anxiety disorder.

Bath University’s professor of applied science and clinical psychology is Professor Paul Salkovskis. Professor Salkovskis recently spoke about the new centre, saying:

“It is very exciting that the university and AWP have forged such strong links for the benefit of people with this type of mental health problem, which carries with it a huge burden of disability.

"Although effective treatment has been possible for some time, it has not been available at the level of expertise required by the most seriously affected. These are unnecessary illnesses which the clinic will be able to deal with, improving quality of life for sufferers.”

The launch of the new centre is scheduled to take place later in 2013 and has so far gained the support of some of the leading OCD charities in the UK.
