Bath welcomes a comedy of manners

'The Circle', a humorous play by Somerset Maugham, is on tour and due to give a series of performances in Bath in January.

This comedy was first brought to the stage in 1921, and has remained popular with audiences ever since. Somerset Maugham emerged as one of the inter-war years' leading playwrights and novelists. Indeed, several of his novels, notably 'The Painted Veil' and 'Of Human Bondage' were later adapted for film.

The Circle is the story of Lady Kitty (Jane Asher), an upper-class beauty, who 30 years previously left her husband Clive (Clive Francis) in order to elope with the politician Lord Porteous (Nicholas Le Provost). The relationship has now, however, turned sour, descending into endless bickering.

Is history about to repeat itself? We learn at a family reunion that Arnold (Pete Ashmore), Lady Kitty and Clive's son, presently faces a similar marital dilemma. Elizabeth (Olivia Vinall), his wife, is threatening to leave him for the handsome Teddie Luton (Chirag Benedict Lobo).

Will events inevitably complete the circle? Or can the next generation avoid making the same mistakes by breaking the cycle?

Tickets range in price from £10.50 to £47.00, inclusive of commission. Graphic design plays an important role in the production of a play or theatrical event.

The Circle is due to run from Wednesday 10th January to Saturday 20th January at The Theatre Royal, Bath.
