Banner printing was recently discovered to have had a long history with Somerset, as it was revealed that two Banners that were created over 200 years ago are to be displayed to the public.
Banner printing is used by Bath and Somerset companies and organisations to promote various products, services and events. However, Banners are not a new phenomenon. Two Banners dating back 242 years were recently unearthed by members of one of the South West’s local history groups.
Whilst banner printing in Bath and the surrounding regions is commonplace today and may utilise modern techniques like digital printing onto durable, weather-proof materials or thick paper and card, 242 years ago the methods used were quite different. The Banners, which belonged to the Friendly Society and the Order of the Forresters, were made from silk.
The Evercreech Local History Society is the group behind the discovery of the Banners. The group recently held a coffee morning to display these two Banners alongside other artefacts of local and historical significance. The society welcomed locals to come and enjoy the items that make up the history of the Somerset village. This exhibition helped to raise awareness of the work the group does and to draw in potential new members of the society.
