Paralympian urges Ashton residents to get sporty

With the country's winter Paralympians stretching every sinew in their bid for glory in Sochi recently, one of London 2012's stars headed into Ashton-under-Lyne to galvanise locals ahead of Sport Relief.

Sarah McPhee, who starred for the British Wheelchair Basketball team in London, was in town to get people to sign up for the Tameside mile.

The former Paralympic World Cup gold medal winner said:

“I’m delighted to be backing Sainsbury’s fundraising campaign.”

There has been a great deal of poster printing done already for the event, with many friends and families likely to head to Print shops with their own designs over the coming days. Banner printing too will likely be in good evidence on the day, marking the start and finish and a host of other activities to take part in.

Those raising cash are able to choose from running over a distance of one, three or six miles.

Sponsored by Sainsbury's supermarket, the Tameside Sport Relief mile will take place at Richmond Park Stadium on Sunday, March 23. It all gets under way at 10.30am, with one mile runners able to set off over half hour intervals until 12pm and the rest heading off at 1pm.

Anyone and everyone can take part, with entry costing just £3 for kids, £6 for adults and family tickets available for £15, with proceeds raised going to Sport Relief.
