Building firm chosen for Ashton-under-Lyne project

Plans for the construction of a new transport interchange in Ashton-under-Lyne have moved forward, with the news that a firm has been chosen to build it.

This new facility is set to be built at the site currently home to the town’s bus station and is being overseen by Transport for Greater Manchester. Now Vinci Construction has been given the contract for the project, with its bid of £12.9 million coming in well under the estimated cost of £15 million.

The planned Tameside Interchange is not a standalone project, as it Forms part of wider Plans for the growth and regeneration of the town centre in Ashton. It is also expected to provide real benefits to those living in the wider area.

Once completed, the facilities on offer will be a major improvement on those at the existing station and it will make changes during taxi, train, tram and bus journeys a lot easier than they are at the moment.

The island platforms within the station will be replaced by one concourse that is covered, while the ticket and information office access, bicycle parking and waiting areas will all be given an upgrade.
