This academy is the brainchild of Claire Roberts, a fully qualified swimming coach, and is based at Ashton swimming pool. Roberts undertook a specialist mermaid course run by a company called fin2fit, which makes her the sole qualified instructor in Manchester.
The children who sign up for the classes have the opportunity to swim as sharks or mermaids, and with Roberts providing a choice of parties, experiences, and lessons, interest among local children and their parents has been intense.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Roberts stated that:
“It all started last year with my mermaid mad daughter Maddie. We bought her a mermaid tail for our holidays and she loved it. When getting back it was packed away as they are not allowed to be used in general swimming pools.”
As a result of this, Roberts decided to investigate further and managed to dig up a course that both the Royal Life Saving Society and the Amateur Swimming Association are affiliated with. Having completed this, she set up the weekend Splash Mermaid Academy Manchester.
