Ashton-under-Lyne boxing club seeks new home

A boxing club located in Ashton-under-Lyne is looking for help in the search for a new base, as it has just six months to find one.

Ashton Albion Boxing Club has been a part of the local community for close to 30 years and has provided young people living in the area with the chance to learn boxing skills, as well as teaching them confidence and discipline. Now it has to move out of the base it has used for most of that time, requiring the club to find a new one to be able to continue.

The club has been based at a site in Penny Meadow, Ashton-under-Lyne, for a quarter of a century. Now the firm that owns these premises want to use them for something else and the club has been given a six-month period to find a replacement.

It is run by three volunteer coaches led by Wayne Heywood and he told the Manchester Evening News that it is vital because it gives local youngsters somewhere to learn positive skills. Flyer printing is often used to let people know about clubs and other participatory activities taking place in the area.

Heywood added:

“We don’t have much funding and rely on the subs that we get from the kids, so we need somewhere affordable that’s big enough to fit the ring and our equipment.”

Heywood also explained that remaining in Ashton would be the preferred option.
