A museum based in Acton is set to offer visitors a chance to delve into the design history of London’s transport system.
A store house for more than 500,000 British heritage artefacts, Acton’s London Transport Museum Depot is set to host a special tour dedicated to poster art. Still used to powerful effect today, expert poster printing services are used to create advertisements and informative notices alike by British transport operators and businesses based around the capital.
The upcoming tour will allow visitors to explore a hand-selected array of Posters from the museum’s world-class curated collection, which will include original artwork that is rarely seen by members of the public. Guests of the tour will also hear the history of how London Underground commissioned poster art from as far back as 1908 to its collaborations with well-known creatives in the city.
Among the oldest Posters in the museum’s collection is the Theatreland map by artist MacDonald Gill. One of seven different decorative maps designed specifically for London Transport, it was created in 1915. The rare pictorial poster maps London's theatrical scene by night and features the map corner being raised like a theatre curtain to reveal a conductor and his orchestra.
The tour will take place on Saturday, October 1 at the London Transport Museum Depot 2, located at 118-120 Museum Way, off Gunnersbury Lane in Acton.Get a Free Quote for Posters
