Acclaimed artist prints on exhibition near Acton

An exhibition of original prints by the renowned British artist Howard Hodgkin, entitled 'In a Public Garden', is currently taking place near Acton.

Hodgkin was among the last of the leading lights of the 20th century British abstraction movement, which included such notable figures as Barbara Hepworth. He is sometimes referred to as being a curious presence in an era dominated by the pop art of Peter Blake and David Hockney.

This showcase will include around 50 distinctive pieces that covers 50 years of Hodgkin’s career, which spanned from 1966 to 2016. Apart from the prints, there are also five paintings together with a selection of archive items encompassing Hodgkin's interest in India, which include photographs and Mughal pottery from the 17th century.

It is an in-Print retrospective that enables the viewer to dive into the artist's world of memory, colour and abstraction. His works constitute bold, yet nuanced statements that critics claim echo strong feelings of remembrance.

The display has been curated by the well-known art historian Richard Calvocoressi. The artworks Venetian Views (1995), which is a sequence of cityscapes, and Swimming (2011), a piece for the London 2012 Olympics, are particular highlights.
