'Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker' is an exhibition of the designer's work that is due to take place at the Pitzhanger Gallery, near Acton over the spring and summer seasons.
The daughter of a Dutch couple, Marthe studied at Chelsea School of Art, taking inspiration from William Morris. Now 95 years of age, she is widely recognised for her hand-drawn wallpaper patterns. Indeed, her intricate designs are much acclaimed for being both imaginative, and for their high quality craftsmanship.
This exhibition tracks the artistic journey from first drawings, through the tracings and innovative lino blocks to the finished articles. Designs inspired by the landscapes that surround her Chiswick studio. Everyday scenes, from a chestnut tree to an angelica plant, become transformed into decorative worlds.
Included here will be a selection of original sketches, prints and other valuable materials, as well as bigger wallpapers and textiles in situ. It affords an insight into the contribution of the artist as a major influence on British interiors over five decades. Her book 'The Making of Marthe Armitage Artist and Patternmaker' was published in 2019.
Entry is free. Print shops can be of great assistance in the promotion of an artistic or cultural event.
'Marthe Armitage: Pattern Maker' will be open to the public from Thursday 19th March ending Sunday 19th July at Pitzhanger Gallery, near Acton.
