New aquatic complex with a WOW factor

Construction of the new downtown aquatic complex is set to break ground in March, but Councillors were not thrilled about it. The $77.6 million complex offered everything including an Olympic-sized competitive pool and diving facility, as well as a family indoor waterpark. Howeverk, the well-designed building with the hefty price tag did not get anyone on the Family Aquatic Steering Committee overly excited, until now.

Last Monday, a re-design of the outer façade was unveiled at the City of Windsor’s Executive Committee of Council that had everyone buzzing. An outstanding architectural rendering of the new façade was presented on a large poster printing format illustrating a brand new exterior to replace the uninspiring squat box shape.

Four-storey glass walls will be placed at the most prominent corner and will offers views into the centre close to the front entrance. The impressive glass wall along with huge colourful Banners and strong concrete Forms on the roofline will create an exciting, visually stunning addition to Windsor’s downtown.

Everyone on the Executive Committee was relieved that the formerly ugly exterior design is gone. Councillors said that the aquatic complex will now be a visual and functional asset to the community that will generate excitement and will be something to be proud of.

The aquatic centre will open for the International Children’s Games in August, 2013, with the entire facility opening in December, 2013. The waterpark will include racing and other water slides, a surf simulator, wave pool, lazy river and kids zone.
