The Rick Hansen Relay will be passing through Windsor on November 22. Mayor Eddie Francis encourages all residents of the city to celebrate at the WFCU Centre. There will be an opening ceremony which will be followed by live entertainment, a sledge hockey game, a free skate and a trade show.
This year is the 25th anniversary of the worldwide Man in Motion Tour; the tour visited 34 different countries in 26 months. To celebrate the anniversary, Rick Hansen began the Rick Hansen Relay on August 24 at Cape Spear, Newfoundland and which will end on May 22, 2012 in Vancouver; it will be retracing the Canadian route of the Man in Motion Tour. The relay will stop in 600 Canadian communities and will cover a total of 12,000 kilometres. 7,000 participants take their turn to run, walk, wheel or bike while wearing the Rick Hansen Medal; after they have had their turn the medal is passed onto the next participant.
All Windsor residents should try and come out to support this worthwhile cause; a great way would be with a banner. Printing companies in the area can provide a dramatic and highly visible banner that can be displayed at the WFCU Centre.
The Rick Hansen Relay raises funds for the Rick Hansen Foundation. The goal of the Foundation is “to raise awareness of the potential of people with disabilities.” It also raises funds for spinal cord injury research and awareness about creating inclusive communities.
