Students at the Whitby Campus of Durham College will soon have a new way to get hands-on experience with the growth and production of fresh produce.
Thanks to a major donation, the campus will soon have a new and fully operational greenhouse. It is being constructed as part of the college’s Center for Food.
Opened in 2013, the center was created based upon the input of the region’s hospitality, agricultural, horticultural, and culinary sectors. Part of its mandate is to embrace the “field to fork” concept, a big part of which involves bringing community-grown food to people in the area. It is hoped that the greenhouse will do just that.
Students in the horticultural program will be able to learn about the production of goods using a greenhouse. It will also give them an opportunity to learn about greenhouse management, operation, and design.
An working greenhouse requires many printed items such as signage, plant and Packaging Labels, and staff name tags. A Print company can provide all of these plus many other items that are required.
The vegetables grown will be used by the college’s culinary program, and dishes prepared from them are expected to be sold in the center’s restaurant or community retail store.
