The International Communities in Bloom competition took place in Whitby recently, giving the area’s residents the chance to show the rest of the world just how special their hometown really is.
The contest is put together every year to encourage towns and cities, whether large or small, to show their civic pride and demonstrate the ways in which they care for the environment. This is achieved through the co-operative efforts of individual property owners, prominent entrepreneurs and government departments of all levels.
This year, Whitby was included in a category with four other Canadian towns and cities with populations of more than 50,000. With its blend of urban areas, historical architecture, farms, and rural landscapes, it provides an interesting break from the usual.
Those judging the competition spent two days exploring the area and based their decisions on several factors, including heritage conservation, environmental action, floral display, community involvement, and even urban forestry; all of these can come together to make a community really stand out from the rest.
The members of Whitby’s Communities in Bloom committee used the help of a local Print company to prepare a 65-page catalog detailing the places and attractions throughout the area that they felt best exemplified what the competition is all about.
Even though it didn’t take top spot with its entry in the contest, the town did very well and received a total of five blooms. It is hoped that this year’s effort will see it do even better.
