The efforts of those living in the Whitby area to make it a beautiful place to live have recently been lauded by Communities in Bloom.
The committee awarded Whitby a ‘five bloom’ rating for 2014, but it also received the accolade of National Award Winner for a town with over 50,000 residents – an honour shared with Wood Buffalo in Alberta. It also got a special mention for relocating historic Lynde House, and making sure that it will be preserved for future generations.
The town thanked the Whitby in Bloom Committee with a special ceremony held at the town hall. The commissioner of community marketing and services noted the contribution it had made to the beautification of the town, and was very pleased with – and grateful for – its efforts.
Communities in Bloom is a national organization, and its trained volunteer judges visited Whitby back in July. They rated it on a number of criteria, including its heritage conservation, tidiness, commitment to the environment, landscape, and floral displays and urban forestry.
Receiving recognition like this can be a draw to potential tourists to the area, as well as businesses and individuals who may be considering relocating to the town.
