Whitby library continues to meet the needs of its patrons

The Whitby Public Library has served the community for over a hundred years, and with each new year it offers more exciting programs and services to its patrons.

In 2009, the library created its strategic plan, which it has used as a guide for its growth. At a recent meeting, representatives of the library presented the town council with Copies of its annual report and also provided updates on its plans for future development.

There are three branches of the library, and each year they provide access to reading material and other programs for over 120,000 people. Together they house a collection of over 300,000 items, most of which are available for loan to the public. Pamphlets and other materials produced by printing companies keep patrons abreast of the newest additions to their schedules of events.

In order to keep up with the rapid changes in technology, a new form of catalog has been created that mirrors a social media website. Patrons can also access ebooks and register for programs online 24 hours a day. As well, the Rossland branch was outfitted with a wheelchair accessible desk in order to better meet the needs of disabled members of the community.

The library has also been working hard to build a strong network of partnerships with many local community groups.

This year, it was honored by the Ontario Library Association with three awards recognizing excellence in providing services to the public. It is expected that this trend will continue through the coming years.
