During a recent gala evening recognizing the business achievements of the community, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce presented its Peter Perry award to a local man in his 90s.
This award, which launched in 1955, recognizes the outstanding contributions that citizens make to their community, and the recipient is selected because they exemplify this through their volunteer and philanthropic activities. This year’s recipient was 90-year-old Charles Rycroft.
Born in Whitby, Rycroft has been helping others throughout most of his life. He began his volunteer career at the age of 10, when he would clean and repair toys for children in need, and has been helping other people ever since. He’s also a World War Two veteran, and has been the president of the Ontario Regiment, the Whitby YMCA, The Rotary Club of Whitby, and the Whitby Chamber of Commerce.
During his acceptance speech, he thanked his wife of 67 years, Eleanor, saying that her support throughout their marriage has made it possible for him to achieve so much.
