This past summer, Whitby Town Council opened its first two off-leash dog parks to members of the public, and the sites are set to become more affordable for the community.
During the council meeting held on September 8th, a sponsorship program from Royal Canin was approved. This will bring an additional $25,000 to the town, which will help to lower the tax bill that residents pay to operate the parks.
The off-leash locations are found at Heber Park Conservation area on Jeffery Street, and Lynde Shores Conservation Area on Cochrane Street. Each offers fenced borders and plenty of parking for those who wish to bring their dogs there to get exercise and have fun. There are areas for the large dogs to run, and separate sections for smaller dogs to play as well.
Under the sponsorship agreement’s terms, the Jeffery Street park will be renamed ‘Royal Canin Jeffery Street Off Leash Dog Park’, and the other will now be called ‘Royal Canin Cochrane Street Off Leash Dog Park’.
The agreement is set to last for the next three years.
The town also hosts the Off Leash Dog Park Volunteer Group, which helps with the upkeep of the grounds and educates users about the rules and user etiquette. Printing companies can help by producing signage for the area that outlines the policies to be followed by park users.
