An awards ceremony was recently held in Whitby that celebrated innovation in technology.
During the Durham Art of Transition Creative Awards, the winners of this year’s Ignite innovative competition were announced. The successful start-ups were Tiko 3D and ProStaff, both of which were awarded $25,000.
The local authorities and the not-for-profit Spark Center organized the event, which celebrates the spirit of innovation that exists in the community.
The competition began in September, and saw 76 different innovators pitch their ideas to a panel of experts in the field of business that was put together by the Spark Center. They received advice and tips from the staff at the center on how to do this in the most effective way.
This was the second year for the competition, and the first in which only local companies that specialize in innovative, high-tech ideas were judged. According to the executive director of the Spark Center, he is both pleased and somewhat surprised with the turnout. He also noted that, as Whitby and the surrounding Durham Region has over 600,000 people, there’s every reason to believe that there are many other innovators out there just waiting to be discovered.
