New Whitby dialysis unit now open for business

Whitby residents who have found out they require kidney dialysis will now be able to obtain this service in the local community.

Lakeridge Health recently held a celebration to mark the grand opening of its brand new dialysis unit. Its planning and setup has taken about a year and a half, and it is one of two hospital based units in the Durham Region.

This new centre is intended to be act as a transition unit, and will be used to help people who are going through their first four to six weeks of dialysis treatment. The CEO of Lakeridge Health remarked that this can be a time when people need the most support. He went on to explain that this can be a difficult time for people, and that the unit will be able to give them the help that they need.

One of its goals is to make sure that patients receive a good grounding in this health care service so they can decide if they would prefer their treatment to take place at home or in a hospital environment. Brochures can be provided to those who need medical service such as this to help them better understand the options available to them.

The grand opening was held on April 18, and the new unit is located at 300 Gordon Street in Whitby. It is part of the services provided by Lakeridge Health, which has Ontario’s third largest program for home dialysis.
