With the recent unveiling of their new training and communications center in Whitby, Durham police have let the public know that they are keeping up with the latest advances in police and first responder services.
Located on Anderson Street, the $20 million center will include a firing range and facilities for firearms instruction. It will also house the area’s 911 call center and IT backup services.
The current 911 communication system handles nearly 650,000 urgent and non-urgent calls every year, and the new facility will allow staff members to work with the emergency services communication platforms in other areas in the Durham region.
If there is ever a problem or a shutdown of the main IT system, the new backup will prevent a disruption in services. This will give the area’s residents great peace of mind that their safety and security are being looked after.
For some time, police have had to have their firearms training and practice on one of the nearby private ranges, but they will now be able to do so in the new building. Construction began in April of 2011, and being over 47,000 square feet in size, there is plenty of room for growth should it become necessary in the future.
