Whitby residents may be pleased to hear about a commitment made by the province to help fund technology at a local food producer.
It was announced that Greenwood Mushroom Farm will receive a $4.1 million grant from the province to help partially offset the $16.5 million price tag for its new facility.
It will use ‘green’ technology – including s scrubbers and biofilters – to prevent the noxious emissions and smells that are created during the mushroom composting process from being released into the surrounding community.
This will be the first time such technology has been used in Canada.
The farm is one of the largest mushroom producers in the province, supplying Ontario and the eastern portion of the country.
The funds will come from the province’s Local Food Fund, which provides grants to local food producers.
According to the farm’s managing partner, it is a win-win situation. The facility gets an upgrade that will help to provide it with a solid platform for future growth, and the community gets relief from bad odors.
He also indicated that the company has been working hand-in-hand with the local community association, which has been instrumental in ensuring the project moves forward.
