The people of Whitby were treated to a very unusual sight recently, when one of the region’s most significant historic buildings was transported through the town’s roads to a new location.
The structure, which was built in the early 1800s, is the oldest house in Whitby, and local officials wanted to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.
It wasn’t the first time the building made a trip. It originally stood at 960 Dundas Street West but was moved in 1986 to 300 Tauton Road, which was the site of the former Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village.
This latest journey took it to its new home at the former site of the Brock Activity Center, which closed last December.
The load measured 40 feet by 30 feet, with a height of 33 feet. Due to its size, the move was very slow, and power and cable lines along the route had to be temporarily removed. Some driveways were briefly blocked as the procession passed by.
It made the first leg of its journey on November 29, before staying for two nights on a piece of land owned by the town. On Sunday, it made the final leg of its trip to its new home.
The house, along with the building that currently sits on the land, will be home to the new Whitby Heritage Museum.
The new museum will likely need Brochures, Stationery, Postcards and other printed materials; no doubt a local Print company will be able to provide these.
