The city of Whitby recently announced its plans for the vacant fire hall located at 201 Brock Street.
The building has not been used for more than a decade and sits at a prime location within the city, which has put out a call to those in the building and development field to submit proposals for redevelopment.
The building was constructed in 1964, but other than providing space on its property for the Durham Farmers’ Market and some other town events, it has not been used and has become run down over the years.
According to Regional Councilor Lorne Coe, the council and its staff have put in a lot of effort to revise the terms of reference for the redevelopment project and come up with a draft document that will help to lead the revitalization of the downtown core. They have gone over it thoroughly and fine-tuned all of the details. Cole remarked that he feels that it is important that the initiative moves ahead so that it can be an anchor for the area and serve to stimulate interest in improving other parts of the city’s center.
