An organization in the Whitby area has put out a call to those who want to make a difference in the life of an older adult.
The Community Care Durham Adult Day Program is a registered charity that provides support to seniors, both at home and at their day program. It also provides respite services for caregivers who need a break.
Most of the programs are free, with a few charging a nominal fee. Their activities encourage the participants to socialize and remain active while seeing to their physical and mental health issues that can come with aging.
The programming involves a variety of options, including baking, crafts, gardening, music, cooking and exercise. There is even pet therapy.
The respite services offered can be vital to a caregiver. They will know their loved one is being cared for while they have a bit of time to themselves.
With an increasing portion of the area’s population reaching their senior years, the need will only increase. Brochure printers can produce materials that let families know about their services.
There are currently three staff member and six volunteers who work with the participants but, since it started last April, the need for volunteers has vastly increased and the call is being sent out in response to this.
It offers an opportunity for anyone who wants to make a difference, and high school students who need to complete community service hours to graduate are especially encouraged to help.
