The people of Whitby and Brooklin are being encouraged to come out and pay a visit to the Harvest Festival at the Grass Park this weekend.
The event was started in 1974 by the Town of Whitby and Group 74. It was initially organized to help new and established residents of the area get to know each other and to promote community spirit. Since then, however, it has grown to be so much more.
The event is expected to have something for everyone. There will be locally grown vegetables, fruit, and other produce for sale, as well as arts and crafts. Local chefs will be on hand throughout the day preparing delicious food using the ingredients found at the festival. It is hoped that this will inspire home gourmets in their own kitchens.
There will also be music, games, and plenty of fun activities for the kids. A printing company has also been called upon to create decorations for the day.
One of the special events that will be featured at the festival will be a scarecrow-making contest. As a way to bring Brooklin and Whitby together in a spirit of friendly competition, the Whitby Chamber of Commerce and Group 74 invited three businesses from each location to design their own scarecrows. Each creation should represent the business while following the harvest theme.
While organizers are hoping for a sunny day, last year’s huge turnout showed that even heavy rain was not enough to dampen people’s enthusiasm for the festival. This year’s event takes place on Saturday and admission is free.
