Ultimate Frisbee season starts with a bang in Toronto

The new ultimate Frisbee season well underway after Toronto Rush played their first game of the year’s campaign in front of a record crowd.

The opening contest, which saw the team take on the New Jersey Hammerheads earlier this month, was the first to be played at Toronto’s Varsity Stadium. Nearly 3,000 fans were there to cheer their club on - the largest ever crowd to attend an American Ultimate Disc League game. Toronto Rush were victorious, and have since gone on to remain undefeated after seven games.

Named after the well-known Canadian band, the team consists of seven players. The sport is similar to football, in that the players throw the disc to one another in an effort to get it into the end zone. Those who throw the disc are known as handlers, while those who catch it are called cutters.

Funding for the team is raised through the sale of tickets and merchandise, much of which is produced by local Print companies. Businesses that offer poster and flyer printing services produce materials to help advertise the games and draw in the crowds.

The players take part in the sport during time off from their regular jobs, and money raised go to help cover the team’s transportation costs. At the end of the season, each member receives a small stipend.

This is the American Ultimate Disc League’s second season, and it is hoped that public interest in the sport will continue to grow.
