Toronto activity makes space for monarchs

Monarch butterflies play an important role in the cultural traditions of the Purépecha and Mazahua indigenous people of Mexico, and an upcoming Toronto event will help to offer these high flyers a warm welcome.

A hands-on environmental service project will be taking place at The Bentway Staging Grounds, and support for the activity has been provided by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. While kids may get involved, anyone under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

The attendees in the session will learn how monarchs migrate, and also how they count on milkweed plants for their survival. Their life cycle, from egg to butterfly, will be reviewed, and everyone can discover the route different populations take to their winter homes. The importance of utilizing native plant species in home, public and corporate spaces will be discussed, and before they head for home, the participants can plant their own milkweed in a newspaper pot to install in their own growing space.

Hands-on stewardship activities can make learning about the environment a lot of fun, and even if they are small, they can still make a big impact. Stationery printers can offer a range items from registration forms to safety waivers, which can help to keep an activity organized and running smoothly.

The From Milkweed to Monarchs activity will be on offer at 45 Dan Leckie Way on August 23rd. It will begin at 1:00 pm.
