Toronto to celebrate Lunar New Year and leftovers

The Lunar New year is almost here, and Toronto residents will be gathering at a local venue to celebrate the Year of the Snake.

The North York Central Library will be welcoming emerging historian Jingshu Yao for a morning of learning about the symbolism of fish in Chinese culture and why it is commonly eaten during Lunar New Year events. The attendees will explore the topic from a modern perspective, including how using leftovers can be part of living a sustainable lifestyle.

The class will explain how, as the word fish is a homophone of “surplus” in Chinese, it ties in well with the concept of abundance and using leftovers. The group will discuss the North York Recipes for Healing project, and will each create their own collage using the surplus and waste material provided. There will also be details shared about Chinese cuisine, and while registrations may be made in advance, drop ins will be welcome for as long as they can be accommodated.

A themed event like this may utilize special decor, and a poster printing company will be able to lend a hand.

The North York Central Library will be hosting the North York Recipes for Healing: Leftover Ingredients event on February 1st. The activity will begin at 1:00 pm. The event is free, but advance registration is recommended and can be done through the Heritage Toronto website.
