Dementia workshop on offer for first responders

A workshop to be held in Timmins will provide care givers and first responders with knowledge and skills they can use in various situations to assist someone with dementia.

Living with dementia can come with its own set of challenges for both the individual and their family and caregivers. One of these can be a tendency to wander, and in this situation, first responders and transit personnel can play an important role.

The Alzheimer Society Timmins-Porcupine District noted that as many as 60% of people who have memory problems related to dementia will wander and become lost, and it has prepared the ‘Finding Your Way’ program to help in this situation. Individuals participating in the workshop will walk away better prepared to help should they encounter a person with dementia in distress. Furthermore, the event is being offered free of charge.

There are seats for up to 24 participants in the class and it is scheduled to run for two hours. Training manuals and certificates of completion are just two of the items that can be prepared for an event like this by area Print shops.

The opportunity for area first responders and transit personnel to learn how they provide compassionate assistance to someone with dementia will be held on January 9th at 38 Pine Street North. More details, including information about the organizer’s other supports, can be found on the event’s online listing.
