Youth hockey tournament to return to Timmins

The Porcupine Minor Hockey Association will be holding its annual Ice Breaker tournament in Timmins this year, welcoming young players from throughout the area.

The tournament is designed to kick off the youth hockey season, and will take place across four arenas. There will be Tier 1 tournaments for teams in the under-18, under-15, under-13 and under-11 age groups. All teams are guaranteed four games as part of a round robin, with the top four in each age group progressing to the knockout round. Games will feature shortened periods to help younger players develop their fitness, with a running clock in the case of blow-outs.

The competition is sanctioned by the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, with permits and approved rosters required. The PMHA also hosts a Winter Classic tournament for tier two or “House League” teams in the same age group in January. This will be the 34th year for the Icebreaker tournament and the 36th for the Winter Classic.

Youth sports tournaments like this often use methods like brochure printing and online registration to help attract competitors from far and wide. The PMHA encourages Timmins and area residents to:

“Come out and support our young athletes as they hit the ice!”

The 2025 Ice Breaker Tournament will take place from October 24 to 26 at Timmins venues, including the Carlo Catterello Barn, Whitney Arena and McIntyre Arena.
