A truck driver in Mississauga recently got a surprise when he found thousands of tiny hitchhikers had decided to try and catch a ride on his vehicle.
The riders were a swarm of honeybees, which had chosen to stop its flight and congregate on the truck. The police were called in to lend assistance, and they, in turn, contacted local bee experts for advice. They were told that swarms like this can happen when a hive of bees becomes too large, and a queen sets off with some of them to start a new hive somewhere else.
It was felt that these tiny creatures were likely just stopping for a rest before they moved on to make their home in a new location. Brochures can be produced that let the public know more about what to do should they encounter a swarm on their property.
According to the Ontario Beekeepers Association, swarming bees tend to not be dangerous and are usually quite docile unless they are disturbed. In most instances they will move on, but if they do not or are causing concern, the association recommends calling in an expert who can safely remove them without causing them harm. Its website contains a list of companies and individuals who can provide this service, with some of them doing so free of charge if the swarm is out in the open. Get a Free Quote for Brochures
