Mississauga to allow secondary units

The residents of Mississauga should soon find they have more choice when it comes to housing. A July 4th city council decision means that property owners in the city will soon be able to designate part of their homes for rent as a second unit.

A recent Ontario law had made it mandatory that cities create bylaws that allow homeowners to install basement apartments, in-law suites, or other types of secondary housing in their place of residence. It is believed that this will increase the amount of safe and affordable housing in the province.

These second units will have to meet Ontario Building Code standards, as well as municipally set by-laws for safety. They will also have to pass housing inspection and the owners will be required to have proof of insurance and pay licensing fees.

It is believed that the criteria will result in an increase in the number of units of quality housing available, while preserving the character of the community.

This decision comes after a series of public meetings were held throughout 2012 and 2013. The results of these meetings have been complied and are available online on the city’s website and also as a physical document which has been produced by a local Print company.

The proposed by-law changes are part of the city’s affordable housing strategy. Members of the public and other stakeholders are invited to contribute their feedback by visiting the city’s website and clicking on the ‘housing choices’ button.
