Mississauga city council recently voted to further protect lands that lie along the Credit River.
Council members made the decision to join the Ontario Greenbelt. They will designate the public lands that border the river as Urban River Valley, the end results of which could mean that over 800 acres would be protected.
Ontario’s Greenbelt is known around the world for protecting more than 1.8 million acres of the province’s natural environment, including lakes, forests, urban and suburban waterways, and more. It also safeguards 10,000 km of trails and works to help ensure the survival of 78 species that are considered to be at risk. This also generates 161 jobs and contributes $9.1 billion to the economy through spin off benefits. An example of this would be printers who make Signs and other markers for the trail systems it maintains.
Part of the plan for the newly designated Urban River Valley lands includes the construction of a new 110 kilometer trail for hiking which will follow the course of the Credit River. This is being done through a partnership with the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation (FGF) and the Credit Valley Conservation. According to Susan Murray, who is the vice president of communications for the FGF, it hoped that this will help to provide a sense of connection between the river and the people who live in the urban and suburban areas that surround it.Get a Free Quote for Signs
