The city of Mississauga is to unveil the winners of its 2013 Streetscape contest at a ceremony next week.
The entrants have been recognized for their contribution of energy, time, and imagination towards making the city such a beautiful place to live.
The program is run on a volunteer basis with support from city staff. Representatives of the four local horticultural societies judged gardens throughout the city on the basis of overall design, general maintenance, originality, and visual appeal.
Being Canada’s sixth largest city, the Mississauga judges had their work cut out for them. The co-chair of the contest noted that this year’s abundant rainfall has resulted in gardens which are particularly lush and attractive, making it very difficult to decide on the winners.
Awards and certificates, which were created with the help of a local Print company, will be presented on Monday during the Streetscape Awards event. Prizes will be given for the best large and small traditional gardens, the most impressive example of a ‘living green’ eco-garden, the best townhouse garden and also the most beautiful business landscape.
There will also be special prizes presented for the Best Display of Annual Color, the Overall Garden of the Year, and the “Golden Gnome” award will be given to the counselor of the ward which has the largest number of winning gardens.
The contest was started in 2009 as part of the city’s Mississauga in Bloom competition, but has grown and is now an event in its own right. It is sponsored by the local horticultural societies and several of the area’s garden and landscape businesses.
